Siblings, Park Joo-Won and Park Ji-Woo, rode a red tandem bicycle through a dilapidated park in Kanggye, the capital of Chagang province of North Korea. Joo-Won was 25, still a bachelor and worked as a teacher. He was a gifted painter and singer, but taught subjects like ‘Great Kim II Sung’ and ‘Communist Morality’ to students in the senior middle school.

Ji-Woo, his sister, had some form of unidentified developmental disorder. His meager salary was just about sufficient to buy food and pay bills, let alone pay for Ji-Woo’s treatment. Ji-Woo usually wore men’s clothing to dissuade sexual assaults on her. Joo-Won had devised the plan after two previous attempts.

“Nice day isn’t it, Sister?” Joo-Won pedaled hard to compensate for his sister. His face was creased with worry.

“Yes. Will we see the Supreme Leader today?”

“I think so. Look, a girl. Do you want to ask her a question?”

A serious looking young girl approached them. With a curt nod, she addressed Joo-Won.

“Praise to the Supreme Leader. You are wearing jeans and banned shoes. It is against our morals.”

Joo-Won looked at her calmly, “My sister here would like to ask you a question.”

“What is it?”

“Is it true that the Supreme Leader never defecates?” Ji-Woo asked, her eyes crinkling with mirth.

Later that evening, the state owned television channel aired the public execution of Park Joo-Won and Park Ji-Woo. The young girl was awarded a bowl of rice for her act of patriotism and loyalty.

    1. It is very sad, PJ. N.Korea famously made their Football (Soccer) coach to work in the construction sites because their team lost 7-0 to Portugal in 2010 World Cup. Thanks for the comment. Varad

  1. You may have heard of the word ‘Aulia’ ( Arabic word whose literal meanings include “custodian”, “protector”, “helper”, and “friend.”) The word has many connotations in north India all pertaining to spiritually great.

A common joke about it is that an ‘aulia’ is one who has no need to micturate or defecate.

Your post reminded me of this old joke.

    Great write.

    1. Absolutely. After losing 7-0 to a Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Portugal in the 2010 Football World Cup, the North Korean squad were made to stand on a public stage and allowed to be abused verbally by the populace. There are lot more such horrible stories that leak out of that place. I once saw a TED talk by a young girl who escaped from N.Korea. It was raw, brutal and hits a nerve.
